Namaskaram Friends, Sadguru offers Mahashivratri Sadhana which allows one to become more receptive to the possibilities of Mahashivratri. One who wishes for spiritual growth should do this sadhana to experience heightened energy levels and prepare for Mahashivratri to receive Shiva’s grace. This sadhana will help to clear karmic baggage easily. Anyone over the age of 8 can participate in this Sadhana.
This sadhana can be practised for 40 days, 21 days, 14 days, 7 days and 3 consecutive days leading up to Mahashivratri.
Mahashivratri Preparatory Sadhana For 14 Days
This year Mahashivratri is on 18 February 2023. I saw an Isha Youtube post on 4/2/2023. It contained a link which explained everything about Mahashivratri sadhana. Last year I participated in an online program on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri 2022. It was ‘In The Grace Of Yoga Isha Pancha Bhuta Kriya Online Program With Sadguru’. I was blessed by the divine Dhayanlinga online on Mahashivratri day. I have published a detailed Blog post on this topic. Do read it. So this year I decided to practice Mahashivratri Sadhana for 14 days. That is from 5/2/2023 to 18/2/2023. I am not going to Isha Yoga Center on Mahashivratri day, So I will be doing culmination sadhana at my home.
The link took me to Isha’s website page where all the details of Mahashivratri Sadhana were given along with videos. The first requirement was a pure cotton black cloth which had to be tied on the upper hand. Rest everything was clear. I had a few questions regarding this black cloth. I am answering these questions through this post. So that anyone interested will get easy guidance.
How To Tie Black Cloth On The Hand
I took a pure cotton 12-inch x 12-inch cloth. Take only pure cotton cloth, because, for culmination sadhana at home, it needs to be burnt to form ashes. So use pure cotton cloth. Use only black colour cloth.
I saw one Youtube video of Isha Shivanga Sadhak, in which he explained how to tie this cloth. In that, he says that for Shivanga sadhana you get a kit, in which this cloth is provided which is in a triangular shape. This is Mahashivratri preparatory sadhana and they have said to take 12 inches of black cloth. So I took 12×12 inches of black pure cotton cloth. I folded it in a triangular shape from the middle. Then I rolled it to make a tape of 1 inch, which can be easily tied on the hand.
Gents will have to tie this cloth on the right upper hand. Ladies will have to tie this cloth on the left upper hand. With the 12 inches of cloth, one can make 2 knots easily to tie on the medium size upper hand. For a fat person, you will have to take cloth which is a little more in length that can make 2 knots.
Tie this black cloth from the 1st day of Mahashivratri preparatory sadhana till the culmination sadhana on the Mahashivratri night. Do not remove this cloth for any reason. Wear it even during a daily bath.
When I tied this cloth tight, I observed that my left hand started paining. So I tied it a little loose, so that blood circulation on the hand is normal. When I tied it a little loose, it came down again and again. So I have to push it up again and again. The tied knot also gives pain between the underarm. So while sleeping keep this knot on the upper side of the hand. Now for 14 days, I have to carry this cloth on the upper hand. It gets hidden easily below the half sleeves t-shirt or kurta. After taking bath it will get wet and will take a little time to dry.
I will be doing culmination sadhana at home. So according to the guidelines, this black cloth should be removed after completing Mahashivratri Jagran. That is on the 19th of February 2023. After finishing the live program with Sadguruji. I will remove this black cloth. It has to be burnt to ashes. The ashes have to be smeared on my forearms and legs after completing the culmination process described in the guidelines. So for that reason take a pure cotton cloth, which will form healthy ashes.
From the Sadhana guidelines I learned that for the culmination at the Isha Yoga Center Coimbatore, this black cloth has to be tied near the Nandi statue, on the big tree which is in front of the Dhyanalinga temple. The process of tieing the cloth in front of Dhyanalinga offers the possibility to dissolve karmic impressions, even after one has left the space. So in this Mahashivratri preparatory sadhana, tieing pure cotton cloth is significant. It will help to blow the karmic bubble thinner. So do not skip this step. If you are willing to do this sadhana, arrange for the black cloth and complete the preparatory sadhana as per the guidelines.
Isha Mahashivratri Preparatory Sadhana Steps
As per the Sadhana guidelines, I will share the steps which I will be following to do this preparatory sadhana for the next 14 days.

I am soaking 5 peppercorns in honey overnight. I am soaking a handful of organic raw peanuts overnight. I get up by 4.30 am. My day starts with a glass of tepid water mixed with a little honey. I consume 2 Isha neem and 2 turmeric capsules with this honey water. I start my yoga practices after that. After finishing Isha’s Yoga practices, I eat peppercorns soaked in honey followed by soaked raw peanuts. My 1st meal is after 12pm. In the evening I practice Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya and Yog Yog Yogeshwaraya chant 12 times for the 2nd time.
I am excited to do this Mahashivratri preparatory sadhana this year for the 1st time. I am sure that it will clear some of my karmic baggage. When the Sadhana is related to karmic baggage, I have experienced that it is not easy. But I am ready for it. I hope that with Sadguru’s grace and with devotion towards him, in my heart, I am going to do this preparatory practice joyfully. I know the grace of my Dhyanalinga is within me and I will have blissful experiences this Mahashivratri too.
